Lesson 3 - Case Study Film 2 - La Haine

Below is a short film that is part of a series by CNN on directors and the cities they live in. Here, Matthiew Kassovitz, the director of La Haine, briefly offers his point of view about Paris, fellow Parisiennes and certain aspects and areas of Paris that he feels are important cinematically.  He also explains why cities are important backdrops for directors and that, as a director, this helps to communicate the messages in his films.

LESSON 2 - Hong Kong Cinema - AS TEARS GO BY

This is the first part of Episode 2 of Jonathon Ross's documentary ASIAN INVASION. This extract offers some historical context of the Hong Kong film industry and how different New Waves affected generic developments and stylistic features. From watching this, you should be able to see how AS Tears Go By is both a commercial film that adopts some popular action codes and stylistic features explored by Hong Kong directors at the time but also plays with the idea of romance and dramatises the action with his anti-heros and complex, emotional characters who want to leave their urban environment but can't.

Dan's class - Set 2, Homework, lesson 1

A2 Film Studies Homework You are going to create your own Urban Story: • Firstly recap your notes (remember the Prezi: www.urbanstories2012@blogspot.co.uk) to remind yourself of the key themes we discussed in class. • Secondly, using your phone’s camera, take at least 5 photos that characterise the urban experience for you. • Put these in a Word document and create a imaginary synopsis for a short “Urban Story” that that joins them together. Your synopsis should include a main character (give them a name) and should reflect some of the ideas about the urban experience we discussed in class. Due next Friday:
