Mark Jayne - Cities & Consumption Excerpt

Read from bottom of p173, The City & Popular Culture, to bottom of p178. The most relevant reading for you in terms of our Urban Story films however is from the bottom of p176 (after the list of films) to the end of p178.

The handout below takes 3 quotes from the reading above, which are perhaps the most applicable to our study of Urban Stories. For each one, try to think of a relevant example from the films.

Lesson 5 - Case Study Film 4 - Lilya 4-Ever, Lukas Moodysson (2002) - Trailer, analysis grid & reading activity instruction

As you watch the trailer for the film make a note of:

1) the common conventions of mise-en-scene, camera, editing and sound that we might expect to see in an urban story film based upon our previous analysis of films and clips
2) the way in which the Urban Environment is represented - does it appear to be friendly and inviting or cold and isolating?
3) the 'journey' we might expect to see the characters go through in the film
4) any thematic issues around power, poverty and conflict that you think the film may explore

Lesson 5 - Case Study Film 4 - Lilya 4-Ever, Lukas Moodysson (2002) - Sight & Sound Review

Below is an interesting review from the above issue of Sight & Sound Magazine about Lilya's plight and 'trading' of one urban environment with another. You will need to print the article out in order to read it.

Lesson 3 - Case Study Film 2 - La Haine

Below is a short film that is part of a series by CNN on directors and the cities they live in. Here, Matthiew Kassovitz, the director of La Haine, briefly offers his point of view about Paris, fellow Parisiennes and certain aspects and areas of Paris that he feels are important cinematically.  He also explains why cities are important backdrops for directors and that, as a director, this helps to communicate the messages in his films.

LESSON 2 - Hong Kong Cinema - AS TEARS GO BY

This is the first part of Episode 2 of Jonathon Ross's documentary ASIAN INVASION. This extract offers some historical context of the Hong Kong film industry and how different New Waves affected generic developments and stylistic features. From watching this, you should be able to see how AS Tears Go By is both a commercial film that adopts some popular action codes and stylistic features explored by Hong Kong directors at the time but also plays with the idea of romance and dramatises the action with his anti-heros and complex, emotional characters who want to leave their urban environment but can't.

It's a really good documentary and you can find all the episodes on www.youtube.com JONATHON ROSS ASIAN INVASION DOCUMENTARY

Dan's class - Set 2, Homework, lesson 1

A2 Film Studies Homework You are going to create your own Urban Story: • Firstly recap your notes (remember the Prezi: www.urbanstories2012@blogspot.co.uk) to remind yourself of the key themes we discussed in class. • Secondly, using your phone’s camera, take at least 5 photos that characterise the urban experience for you. • Put these in a Word document and create a imaginary synopsis for a short “Urban Story” that that joins them together. Your synopsis should include a main character (give them a name) and should reflect some of the ideas about the urban experience we discussed in class. Due next Friday:

Lesson 1 Homework - set 1 (Louisa)

Reminder of the homework for today's lesson - due in for my lesson next Wednesday:

  • The Battle of Algiers (on the blog)

2) Pick a minimum of 2 further clips from the Prezi, analyse them and fill out the grid on your handout

3) Write one side of A4 in response to the question: What is an Urban Story?  Your answer should include a definition and consider some of the themes, characters, common props and stylistic codes that we would expect to see. You MUST refer to examples from the clips you have analysed to support your answer.

Below is a reminder of some of the points that you came up with about the Urban Experience, which may help you writing your answer...
